The Unit of Medical Technology & Intelligent Information Systems (MedLab) is a highly innovative and self-contained research unit which resides at the Dept.of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Ioannina.

The Unit is strongly activated in the fields of Biomedical Engineering and development of Intelligent Information systems.  It has an internationally acknowledged excellence in conducting high quality scientific research and developing innovative Information Technology (IT) applications, products and services.

The Unit is co-ordinated by Prof. Dimitrios I. Fotiadis, who is Professor of “Biomedical Engineering” at the Dept.of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Ioannina.

MedLab has developed collaborations with various departments and research organizations of the University of Ioannina, with other Universities and Institutions and the Industry.  Most of the Unit activities are based on international collaborations in the framework of European and Nationally funded projects (FP5, FP6, Information Society, etc).

The Unit is a key actor in Greece, in the development of strategic plans for the information society and innovation (RISE, ENTI, etc.) and also plays a vital role in the introduction and dissemination of information technology policies in the region of Epirus.

MedLab's devision are:
  • the software engineering department
  • the software development department
  • the research department and
  • the administration
They all cooperate smoothly to produce high quality results.

MedLab’s research activities cover a variety of subjects and they are classified into the following domains:
  • Biomedical Research
Modelling and simulation of human tissues using applied mathematics methods.
  • Automated Diagnosis
Processing and analysis of biomedical signals (e.g.  ECG, EMG) and images (e.g.  MRI, ultrasound).
  • Biomagnetism and Biomaterials
Development of phenomenological models for the interpretation of magneto-mechanical characteristics of highy technological ferromagnetic materials.  Direct applications include the determination of the role of material properties, biomagnetism, actuator and sensor devices (Fero-fluids, magnetic drug targeting).
  • Bioinformatics
Analysis of Biological Sequences (DNA, Proteins, etc.) providing better understanding of living organisms, identification of genetic risks and design of the appropriate drugs.
  • Networks
Design, development and operation of networks and network applications especially for Wireless Communication and 3G Applications.
  • Medical Informatics
Use and development of information technologies (Ontologies, lexicons, etc.) for the better storage and exchange of information among heterogeneous medical systems interface technologies (speech to text, text to speech), natural language proceccing, etc.
